Hello,
I’m Lea Helygain
I am privileged to be a stay-at-home mother of three young children, living in the heart of the Welsh countryside. My pleasure is in going for walks with a child in one hand and a sketchbook in the other. My passion is helping people have good grounding, seeing the big picture in the little intricacies of home life. Rooted in Christian faith and Welsh heritage I have painted visions of home, birds and intimate portrait through mental health struggles.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me.
Home studio
Drawings of my children, studies from local walks, flowers from the garden and bible journaling notes come together in my home studio. Prayerfully and playfully I create on my DIY desk, made from my childrens old cot!
I feel so privileged that my creations in the studio get used to encourage and soothe, inspire and bring wonder to our journey of knowing God in this life.
What has inspired the Art?
-
Motherhood has greatly inspired the latest series. Seeing the vulnerability of our tiny babies and creating a safe place for us all to flourish. The honour of raising children is something I marvel at and focus on when the responsibility gets heavy.
Seeing my children play creatively and get involved in my studio has been freeing.

I’m a Christian. All the Art comes from a place of intimacy with Jesus. I’m fascinated by God, the possibility of getting to know Him better. It will be my life’s pilgrimage. It also means I like exhibiting in churches where there can be open discussion and sharing experiences of searching or walking with God. I’ve created the brand “We Draw Near” for encouraging cards to help share our journey together.

I’m a native Welsh speaker born and bred in north Wales. Being brought up in a culture that values all the arts, poetry, singing, craft especially through the Eisteddfod was a great joy. The opportunity to study at the beautiful Aberystwyth School of Art (1st BA Hons), volunteer with Aberystwyth Printmakers, become an artist in Residence with Arad Goch theatre and winning the young Artist Urdd scholarship has enabled me to grow and share my art internationally. The encouragement from a close knit community and the heritage of heartfelt hymns and beautiful churches is something I hold dear.
-
I chose to become an artist after struggling with mental health at a young age. Drawing self portraits helped me process my feeling and feel seen. It has given me a huge respect for the complexity and beauty of human life. Having visual images of seasons of my life and the reality of my faith helps me ground myself and focus my mind on whats important.
Here’s a comic I made of how I drew closer to God in my late teens through a time of dipression.

Materials and techniques
I use an extensive variety of materials - oil, acrylic, pastels, inks, graphite, wax - but what underpins it all is the ability to capture what I observe through drawing. I specialised in printmaking at university so techniques like collagraphs and monoprinting come up in my work.
I like combining controllable media like pencils and etching with more fluid unpredictable materials like inks, paint and crayons. This contrast between the rational observation and the emotional intuition is a theme in the way I work, combining realism with emotional abstraction.
